Assailants beat soccer reporter with iron bars

A sports journalist was taken to hospital with head injuries on Saturday after being attacked outside his Athens home by a group of hooded men wielding iron bars. Kostas Nikolakopoulos suffered severe bruising but authorities said he was in a stable condition on Saturday night and that he would remain in hospital at least until today. The incident occurred at 4 p.m. in the Ilion neighborhood, as he was returning from his radio show on Super Sport FM. His unidentified assailants are said to have hit him on the back of the head and in the ribs with iron bars and brass knuckles. Police have asked for a tape of his radio show, suspecting that the assault may have been soccer-related. Another journalist at the same radio station, Philippos Syrigos, was stabbed and badly beaten by two unidentified assailants last October. Nikolakopoulos also works for Fos ton Spor and Adesmeftos Typos newspapers.
