SPRING RITUAL

Evinos horse race Aspiring equestrians from Evinohorio, near the town of Messolonghi in central Greece yesterday participated in the reenactment of an ancient race celebrating the arrival of spring. The race is held every year on a special track that runs along the bank of the Evinos River. Robbery arrests Two suspected robbers believed to have netted 610,000 euros in at least eight armed raids on branches of public utilities services in the Attica area have been caught, police said on Saturday. The unidentified men, aged 33 and 25, are believed to have been behind recent raids on branches of the Public Power Corporation (PPC) branches in Kallithea, Halandri and Glyfada, and of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE) in Ilion, Kallithea, Halandri, Ilioupolis and Aghios Dimitrios. Transmitter protest Residents of Thessaloniki municipalities yesterday blocked off access to the area of Hortiatis to protest against the mass of television and radio transmitters in the area. Protesters, who have long been calling for the removal of dozens of transmitters due to health concerns, dug a ditch into one of the roads leading towards the area to further hinder access.
