A Turkish construction team works on a new house in Temtos, near Kyrenia, in the Turkish-occupied northern section of Cyprus. Building activity has mushroomed in the north in recent years, with much of it taking place on properties taken from the Greek Cypriots who were forced to flee after the 1974 Turkish invasion. The properties’ legal owners are increasingly resorting to court action against the people – believed to include several thousand foreign nationals, particularly Britons – currently using their land or homes. Today, the first case is due to be heard against a Turkish Cypriot occupying the home of a Greek-Cypriot refugee.
