Drug-dealing guard to become an inmate

A Thessaloniki court yesterday sentenced a prison guard to 14 years in jail after he was found guilty of using his position to run a drug-dealing operation which supplied inmates at the local Diavata Prison with heroin. The 39-year-old man was arrested last year when two bundles of heroin, weighing a total of some 310 grams, were found in his possession as he was on his way to work. The three-member appeals court heard that the unnamed guard would take orders for drugs from convicts at the prison and then leave the heroin in trash cans at the jail overnight for his customers to find in the morning. An inmate at Diavata Prison, who acted as the guard’s accomplice was given a four-year sentence for his part in the operation. The dealer who supplied the prison officer with the drugs was sentenced to 16 years in jail.
