‘Genetic engineering is a gamble’
The only research into GM products conducted on humans was related to GM soya. It showed that the gene introduced into the soya DNA was automatically transmitted into the human DNA. Scientists say that these new elements may activate other genes in our organisms with unknown consequences. «Genetic engineering, at least in its current form, is a gamble,» said Smith. «It is a risk to eat GM foods; it is a risk to plant GM seeds; it is a risk to put products on the market when it will take at least 10 years before we know all their possible side effects. It is a risk that I believe our world should not take.»
