Hi-tech gov’t for less hassle

In an attempt to trim notoriously long lines at state services, the government launched a new online program yesterday that lets Greeks deal with more state services electronically. The 16-million-euro program, called Politeia, will involve third-generation technologies and encourage people to make use of digital information with an increased sense of security. The program will include the creation of the Hermes portal, a one-stop site that will offer complete information about state departments via the Internet. Through the Hermes portal, Greeks will also be able to submit an application to obtain an electronic signature that will allow them to deal with public services from home. The new program will offer additional services such as an online connection with pension funds that can approve the issuing of medicine. «The system will operate with transparency and credibility and will offer quality services,» said Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos at the program’s presentation yesterday.
