‘I insist that minorities’ rights must be safeguarded’

Will you change Albanian policy on Kosovo? We have had a serious, pro-independence position on Kosovo. I insist that the rights of the Serbs and other minorities in Kosovo be safeguarded. I have insisted on that in my discussions with Kosovo’s political leaders. Because, regardless of their political statements, the seriousness of which I do not doubt, the ethnic Albanians do not show respect for the Serb minority. And this is because until five years ago that minority dominated and oppressed the ethnic Albanians. So I tell them to follow the example of the Albanians in Albania. We have no problem with the Greek minority; we get along very well together. On the other hand, the Serb minority must realize that it is in their interests to become involved in the political life of Kosovo. Do you think the Nano government was right to send troops into Afghanistan and Iraq or do you intend to withdraw them? Absolutely not; I won’t withdraw them. I support the Bush dogma, the declaration of freedom and democracy. We suffered under the communist system that collapsed in Europe. Theocratic dictatorships are unacceptable nowadays. Wasn’t the Taleban regime a dictatorship? Shouldn’t they have fallen for their oppression of women? Is there a worse person than Saddam?
