Authorities detain 146 on Crete, arrest two suspected smugglers The coast guard arrested two people traffickers off the island of Crete yesterday after they dropped off 146 illegal immigrants on shore, officials said. With the help of two patrol boats and a twin engine plane, the coast guard intercepted the 25-meter boat that local residents had spotted dropping off the migrants. The two men arrested identified themselves as Egyptian. No further details about the illegal immigrants were available. GIORGOS MOUZAKIS Composer of satires has died at 83 Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis yesterday paid tribute to veteran composer Giorgos Mouzakis, who died on Saturday at the age of 83. «Few people had the luck and distinction to have their name so unwaveringly associated with the history of a theatrical genre,» Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said yesterday of Mouzakis, who gained fame for his musical satires of 1950s Greek theater. Mouzakis, who in 2003 received a presidential distinction for his 68-year contribution to Greek music, is to be buried at the Second Cemetery in Athens tomorrow. Shooting arrest An Albanian who allegedly shot a policeman in a patrol car with the aim of stealing the officer’s service revolver to use in robberies yesterday faced a Piraeus prosecutor with his alleged would-be accomplice, another Albanian. According to police, the 24-year-old Albanian shot the patrolling officer in Nikaia late on Saturday night but fled without taking the service gun after the officer radioed for help. Police later caught up with the fugitive and yesterday morning arrested his would-be accomplice. The policeman was hospitalized with injuries to his right thigh. Charity work The Church of Greece spends some 62 million euros a year on operating charities, work that is overlooked by the media, Archbishop Christodoulos said yesterday. Preaching at a church in Athens, Christodoulos said this amount does not come from taxpayers but from church funds. Playground fatality A 16-year-old Bulgarian youth was killed yesterday after being struck by the iron bar of a handball goal post while playing in a Thessaloniki schoolyard with his friends in Ambelokipi. The unnamed boy tried to swing from the horizontal bar of the goalpost but brought it down upon his head.
