Crazed man kills swimmer

Port officials yesterday arrested a 29-year-old man accused of drowning a 72-year-old woman at the beach of Alimos in southeast Athens while he was reportedly in a state of crazed hysteria. At about 7 a.m yesterday, witnesses said they saw a fully clothed man wading into the water and then harassing another swimmer, a 50-year-old woman. The woman avoided the man by getting out of the water. He then turned his attention to three elderly women swimming nearby, diving under their legs. Two of the women got out of the water, but the third – the 72-year-old – was unable to get away. The man then grabbed the woman by the head, forcing her head in and out of the water until she drowned. Witnesses said the man, a foreign national, then got out of the water and sat by himself, laughing incessantly. Those watching him said he seemed like he wasn’t aware of what he had just done. Port authorities arrived at the scene and arrested the man after being notified by other swimmers at the beach.
