Two schoolchildren return…
Two schoolchildren return to Aghios Dimitrios 6th Primary School in Athens yesterday after their summer vacation. Some 1.5 million students went back to class. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and Education Minister Marietta Giannakou visited Aghios Dimitrios to mark the first day of the new academic year. Teaching unions claimed a shortage of some 4,260 teachers at the 15,500 schools around Greece. Giannakou said that any gaps would be filled immediately and accused opponents of trying to create ‘panic’ and not having the interests of the education system at heart.
