Boy abuse suspect is arrested

Police arrested a 39-year-old man in Crete yesterday, accused of severely physically and sexually abusing a 5-year-old boy, after the child’s mother went to visit the alleged offender while police were following her. Police said that the woman had been given the use of a room belonging to the nursing staff of the hospital in which her son was being treated so that she could be close to the boy, who is fighting for his life. Her son was rushed to the hospital on Saturday with head injuries and a brain hemorrhage. Suspicions were aroused when the boy’s mother would leave the room provided for her in the evenings and not return until the following day. Police then decided to follow the 31-year-old Romanian woman and found that she was spending her evenings at a local hotel. After monitoring her on Tuesday night, police then arrested the man, Panayiotis Kalatzis, with whom she was staying. Kalatzis later confessed to abusing the child, according to officers.
