Gov’t: Not responsible for Santorini disaster

The Culture Ministry yesterday denied any responsibility for last Friday’s collapse of a huge steel roof over the Akrotiri site on Santorini, which killed a tourist and injured six others, but vowed to determine what caused the tragedy. Deputy Culture Minister Petros Tatoulis described the collapse of a section of the 14,000-square-meter roof as «an extreme incident» but suggested some of the blame lay with opposition PASOK, which was in government when the roof’s construction began in 2000. PASOK MP and former culture minister Evangelos Venizelos accused the government of «political cowardice» and called on Tatoulis and Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis «to face their responsibilities and ensure an objective investigation into the incident so blame can be apportioned.»
