A painting by Russian futurist Alaxander Rodchenko

A painting by Russian futurist Alaxander Rodchenko, from the Costakis Collection of Russian avant-garde art purchased by Greece in 1999 for over 14 billion drachmas. Works from the collection will be shown at the Contemporary Art Center in Larissa, central Greece, from this Saturday to March 9. The center will display 40 pieces by 17 artists – including Malevic, Popova, Tatlin and Redho – from Thessaloniki’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Matei, a 26-year-old Greek-Romanian robber, had embarrassed the police earlier that month by escaping after another highly publicized hostage-taking venture which was covered live on television. During his arrest, he suffered severe head injuries which, in combination with the heavy sedatives given to him at the Nikaia General State Hospital, led to his death, according to a coroner’s report.
