OSE staff takes pay, drops case

Workers at the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) have dropped an injunction claim against their employer over health-endangering train carriages after the company agreed to give employees a 7 percent pay rise, a source said yesterday. The workers had sought the court order after independent tests found asbestos, a carcinogen, on panels in carriages used by OSE on its Balkan routes, confirming an earlier report in Kathimerini. But the railway employees appear to have put health concerns aside and agreed to receive the pay hike – which is double the country’s inflation rate – in return for dropping their case against the company. The source said OSE has tried to play down the presence of asbestos in the gravel after tests from the Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME) showed traces of the carcinogen. The source added that members of IGME and the Development Ministry have accused OSE officials of pressuring them and trying to influence their findings.
