An aerial photograph of the port of Piraeus yesterday shows cruise liners anchored in the harbor. World Maritime Day is being celebrated today and, to mark the occasion, Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kefaloyiannis issued a statement praising Greek seamen for their contribution to world shipping. He said they ‘give their souls’ to the industry, traveling all over the world and spending time away from their families. Kefaloyiannis said 90 percent of the world’s trade is conducted by sea, meaning some 3,800 Greek-owned ships are responsible for conducting a quarter of the world’s trade.
