A worker at a cotton gin near Mesolongi, western Greece, expresses his frustration yesterday following a decision by the state organization responsible for distributing agricultural subsidies to Greek farmers (OPEKEPE) to lower the maximum permitted level of moisture in cotton to 15 percent from 18 percent. According to local producers, the regional climate is such that the moisture level of cotton produced there ranges between 15 percent and 18 percent. OPEKEPE’s decision also dictates that the amount of ‘foreign matter’ in the cotton should not exceed 8 percent.
