Bullets fly in bank holdup

Customers queuing up in a bank in central Athens found themselves in the middle of a shootout yesterday between an armed robber and a security guard. Police said an armed man entered a branch of ATE Bank in Kato Patissia, central Athens, at about midday but was stopped by the security guard on duty. A shootout followed between the two men as the customers fell to the floor to get out of the way of the flying bullets. No one was hurt during the incident. «There were about 10 shots fired,» said one of the customers. The robber then fled the scene on a motor bike, empty-handed. A police manhunt was immediately launched but failed to find the man. Only minutes earlier, another branch of ATE Bank was held up in Nea Erythraia, northern Athens, while a security guard was emptying the bank’s ATM.
