A few hundred farmers from the border area of Ferres, in Thrace, invaded the nearby town of Alexandroupolis with 60 tractors yesterday demanding a meeting with top Agriculture Ministry officials in Athens. An appointment was made for next week. The rest of the country was quiet yesterday, in the aftermath of the previous weeks’ protests seeking higher crop subsidies. Today, farmers from Thessaly – the protesters’ hard core – will decide if and when to organize a tractor-borne descent on Athens. Madden noted that in his three years in Greece, two of his «starkest memories» are the murder of his embassy’s defense attache, Brig Stephen Saunders, by the November 17 group on June 8, 2000, and the Sept.11 attacks. But he noted that the attacks had caused stronger cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
