Guards on duty in the United Nations buffer zone at the end of Ledra Street in the center of Nicosia yesterday. Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said Nicosia would not accept the creation of a ‘border post’ in Ledra Street. The nature of the works being carried out by Turkish troops in the area resemble a bridge of separation rather than one of unification, Papadopoulos said. The UN has stressed that Turkey’s actions are a violation, he added. Meanwhile, Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iakovou warned that Ankara would not tolerate further provocations from Turkish authorities, referring to Turkey’s veto against Cyprus joining the US-led Treaty on Open Skies.
