Tax dodgers tracked online

In a bid to target tax dodgers, the Finance Ministry will use the Internet from next year to connect with the accounting departments of companies and keep a closer eye on their transactions, sources told Sunday’s Kathimerini. The ministry decided in a meeting last week that tax officials will use online technology to monitor daily electronic transactions conducted by firms. Officials argue that this will reduce tax evasion and help authorities trace fake invoices being distributed in the market. It was not revealed exactly how the system would operate or the basis on which the tax office would track firms. The online monitoring of invoices issued to customers and those received from suppliers will also help the government cross-check the transaction and confirm if there is full disclosure from both parties, the source added.
