Cyprus calls off Greek trips for rowdy teens

Embarrassing rowdiness from Cypriot teenagers has compelled Nicosia to ban organized school trips to Greece, the Cypriot government said yesterday. Nicosia made the decision – which must be approved by Parliament to become law – after visiting a string of incidents involving misbehaving Cypriot juveniles shocked the public. «Trips to Greece no longer serve the purpose they were meant to,» said Cyprus government spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides. The trips to Greece are supposed to expose Cypriot students to local culture, but many students often spend much of their time shopping and clubbing. Last weekend, hundreds of students from a Limassol high school fought with pupils from Paphos in western Cyprus, damaging property last weekend while on a break they organized.
