Fugitive ex-judge arrested

Former judge Constantina Bourboulia, who had been on the run from authorities for the last four months, was arrested in Paris yesterday and is likely to soon be extradited to Greece. Bourboulia was detained outside her sister’s home in an upmarket neighborhood in the French capital after two Greek policemen flew to Paris earlier in the week to help French authorities find her. Greece has issued a European arrest warrant for Bourboulia, which should speed her return to Athens. «I believe the former magistrate will very soon be in the hands of Greek justice,» said Justice Minister Anastassis Papaligouras. «This arrest opens a new chapter in the extraction of the cancerous trial-fixing ring.» Bourboulia resigned from her post on health grounds in September 2002 after a probe had been launched into her handling of an investigation into allegations of stock manipulation during the share boom of 1999. Last June, Bourboulia was sentenced to three years and 10 months in jail after being found guilty of mishandling the probe. She has since been charged with abuse of power as well.
