Cypriot MEP Marios Matsakis…
Cypriot MEP Marios Matsakis is transferred from a military court to a civil court in the Turkish-occupied part of Nicosia yesterday. The MEP was detained on Sunday after he attempted to enter the island’s Turkish-held north with a traditional New Year’s cake for Turkish-Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. The military court suspended his hearing on charges of illegal entry until 2009, when Matsakis’s term as an MEP is due to end. The second court, which accused Matsakis of ‘stealing a Turkish flag’ from Nicosia’s buffer zone last month adjourned until Thursday. Matsakis said he was due in Brussels that day but was warned that he will be fined 36,000 euros if he fails to attend his hearing.
