Sheep graze on tons of tomatos dumped by farmers in Tymbaki, in the Cretan prefecture of Iraklion, on Thursday. Tomato producers in Crete and elsewhere have started tossing their crops – either to their livestock or into the garbage – as they find they are unable to sell them at the price they want. Tomatoes are currently being sold for as little as 50 cents a kilo on the country’s street markets. Tymbaki is the largest tomato-producing region of Crete. Virtually all tomato production is from greenhouses with open-field production becoming increasingly rare.
