More systematic policing

What is needed, according to traffic expert Yiannis Frantzeskakis, is more systematic, selective policing of illegal parking within an appropriate policy to improve traffic conditions with regard to parking. «Providing support for municipalities with trained municipal police officers, if this is properly planned and begins immediately, could have significant results,» said Frantzeskakis, who is also a professor emeritus at the National Technical University. He is also in favor of controlled parking, particularly in the center of municipalities, in order to make optimum use of parking places on the roads, with priority given to local residents and short-term visitors, and with a complete ban on illegal parking. Alternative solutions, such as new parking garages, are very important. «The Environment and Public Works Ministry needs to speed up its plans to construct new off-road parking lots through contracting out,» he said. Another important parameter in fighting traffic jams is to have a systematic study and plan for new traffic measures and to coordinate all agencies involved. Traffic currently comes under the authority of the ministries for Transport, the Environment and Public Works and Public Order, a system that causes delays in decision-making and in coordination generally.
