Prison wing to make way for public park
Hundreds of convicts are to leave the women’s wing of Korydallos Prison by July, when the 2.7-hectare site – bar the courtroom hearing the appeals of November 17 members – will be razed to make room for a public park, Korydallos Mayor Stephanos Christou said yesterday. About 300 female inmates will be transferred into the jail’s north wing while 900 male convicts are moved to new jails, according to a Justice Ministry decision. After the works, the women will also be moved. The 0.6-hectare courtroom will not be touched until the cases have been heard, Christou said. Reacting to complaints by area residents, the ministry has vowed to move 90 percent of the inmates out of the local jail. New prison facilities due to open this year in Trikala, Domoko, Grevena, Drama and Serres will accommodate 2,400 convicts.
