EU still popular, but thumbs down for euro
Most Greeks remain in favor of the European Union (EU), according to the results of a Eurobarometer poll made public yesterday, although the 25 nation bloc’s popularity appears to be dwindling. About 54 percent of Greeks said that they felt positive about belonging to the EU, while 67 percent replied that Greece had benefited from membership. Percentages were lower than those recorded in the recent past. The euro, thought by many to be responsible for creating inflationary pressure, has also been losing fans. Fifty-three percent said that they were disappointed with the euro while 46 percent replied that they still support the currency. The survey, conducted on a sample of a 1,000 voters, confirmed that Greeks’ main concerns remain unemployment and poverty.
