Power use hits record levels

As snow continued to fall across the country yesterday, a record amount of electricity was used in Attica while a growing number of villages were left in the dark as Greece’s power grid struggled with the wintry conditions. Parts of the Ionian islands of Cephalonia and Ithaca suffered a blackout for a second straight day yesterday, and, according to authorities, power is not expected to be restored until tomorrow afternoon. «We cannot do anything more than introduce temporary solutions,» Public Power Corporation Managing Director Dimitris Maniatakis told Kathimerini. Demand for electricity in Attica reached a record 3,650 megawatts on Tuesday, but most of the problems were found outside of the capital. Villages on the islands of Evia, Icaria, Naxos and Chios were among the areas that were without electricity.
