Cypriot Marcos Pagdatis expresses…

Cypriot Marcos Pagdatis expresses joy and relief yesterday after defeating David Nalbandian of Argentina at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne. The unexpected victory by the unseeded 20-year-old triggered street parties in his hometown of Limassol and congratulations from Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, who has excused Pagdatis from military service to allow him to concentrate on his tennis career. Pagdatis, who beat Nalbandian three sets to two after a three-and-a-half-hour match, will now face either Switzerland’s world No. 1 Roger Federer or Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer in Sunday’s final.
