Schoolboy’s day off has officials in a spin

A schoolboy who said someone tried to kidnap him yesterday led to a police mobilization and the education minister denouncing the alleged criminals before the child capitulated and admitted he had been lying. A neighbor spotted the 12-year-old wandering the streets of Menidi, northern Athens, yesterday. The child told him that two men wearing hoods and driving a black BMW approached him on his way to school and chased him when he refused to get into their car. The child was escorted to school by his neighbor and the police were called. Education Minister Marietta Giannakou expressed concern at the news and said authorities were trying to combat this phenomenon. However, during questioning by police, the elementary school student broke down and admitted he cooked up the whole affair because he wanted to skip school.
