Call for larger, stronger formations
The head of the Central Union of Greek Municipalities (KEDKE), Paris Koukoulopoulos, is absolutely opposed to secession from Capodistrias municipalities. «We should dare to take Capodistrias a step further and restrict them in future to 200 or 250,» he told Kathimerini. He claims that one municipality should be enough for each island, and that larger islands should have the same regulations as the mainland. He suggests metropolitan municipalities for Athens and Thessaloniki. «This concept must go through the entire political system,» added Koukoulopoulos. «The Capodistrias program is not viable no matter how much money is thrown at it. We have to aim for larger formations, for stronger municipalities. After all, with the exception of France, all over Europe municipalities are expanding, being made stronger.»
