The Greek police seem to have begun following the European lead in order to curb soccer violence on and off the pitch. A sub-directorate of the State Security Department already has a special team dedicated to combating hooliganism, with a database containing the identity and profile of those who have caused or might cause episodes. «Until recently, there was no such database but we are gradually getting organized. The clubs are obliged to keep files recording the identity of their members, and now we are doing the same thing,» the officer in charge of keeping order in and around soccer grounds in Athens told Kathimerini recently. The same sub-directorate almost certainly has in its possession the video of the episodes that took place between Panionios and Olympiakos supporters at the Nea Smyrni stadium last year and that led to the arrest of some of the perpetrators.
