No relief from loud car stunts

A police official told Kathimerini yesterday that authorities cannot stop youths from gathering at a parking lot in Neo Faliron, southern Athens, for high-speed, high-risk car races that drown the neighborhood in noise. A large parking area located next to the Peace and Friendship Stadium is a nightly meeting point for dozens of youths who meet to display their skills as stunt drivers. The sound of roaring engines and screeching tires can be heard across the busy highways surrounding the car park. A police official from Piraeus said it is impossible to supervise the neighborhood daily because it hosts many other activities. «We cannot cut off the roads and ban the entry of cars because there are many coffee shops, restaurants and sports clubs there,» he told Kathimerini. «When there are many youths we can only get rid of them with a whole police squad,» he added.
