Policeman arrested at airport

A police officer was among six men arrested at Athens International Airport yesterday in connection with an attempt to smuggle migrants through security, the Public Order Ministry said. The unnamed policeman was arrested after officers from the force’s internal affairs squad and police at the airport were alerted to the suspicious behavior of two passengers from Egypt. They appeared to have missed a connecting flight to Russia and were in the transit lounge when, said the ministry, a third Egyptian entered the area illegally and began discussing how he would get them past security. According to the ministry’s statement, the officer helped the third Egyptian gain access to the transit hall, using his police pass. Two more suspects, from Egypt and Sudan, were arrested outside the transit area. Another man was also taken in for questioning on the island of Salamina. Authorities suspect that the men operated as an organized ring and had helped illegal immigrants into the country on other occasions.
