Trip to Ankara
What exactly happened on your trip to Ankara? What did you talk about with the Turkish leaders? Two months ago I visited Ankara in a private capacity. I visited the Turkish Parliament, where I had a number of contacts with government officials such as the vice president of the ruling party. During my visit to the Parliament, I also met some members of the Commission for European Affairs for Turkey’s Adjustment to the European Union, who had recently visited Thrace. I briefed them on the Greek government’s support for Turkey’s membership in the EU, in accordance with the set framework. I also replied to a specific question by a member of the committee on the situation in minority schools, the question of tithed assets (vakuf) and the appointment of the mufti. These are all issues that have existed for many decades and I took the opportunity to express my views as to how these problems should be resolved.
