Students scuffled with police…

Students scuffled with police in central Athens yesterday during a protest against the government’s plans to allow private universities to operate in Greece. Some 300 students marched to Parliament to voice their opposition but their path was blocked by riot police. The two sides clashed and officers fired tear gas at the protesters. No injuries or arrests were reported but the fighting meant that the roads around Syntagma Square had to be closed briefly. Meanwhile, university teaching staff have planned a three-day strike from next Tuesday in a show of opposition to the government’s plans for private universities.
