Falling crane kills 2 workers

Two workers were killed and five others were injured in a workplace accident at the port of Elefsina, west of Athens, yesterday when part of a crane collapsed. Bulgarian national Bladov Magavevev, aged 25, and Greek Vangelis Tsolakos, aged 50, were killed at about 11 a.m. at facilities owned by Titan Cement. According to hospital officials, two of the injured workers were in serious condition. Titan said that it will help support the families of the two dead employees, adding that the work was being completed by a contractor hired to finish maintenance work. The causes of the accident are being investigated but workers have pointed to a lack of safety standards at the port. The General Confederation of Greek Labor (GSEE), the country’s largest union group, said it had demanded safety precautions to be taken and will take legal action.
