Thugs attack officers issuing parking tickets

Two municipal police officers were hospitalized yesterday after a group of 10 people viciously attacked them while they were issuing parking tickets in Exarchia, central Athens, authorities said. The suspects were apparently sitting at a cafeteria when they noticed the two officers at the intersection of Tzavela and Mesolongi streets. The group beat up the officers and then ran away, disappearing into the labyrinthine of side streets in Exarchia, a popular hangout for Athenian anarchists. The officers were taken to Evangelismos Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, police said they had charged one person in connection with damage caused in central Athens during a student rally on Thursday. The suspect was injured while trying to smash the window of a bank and is in a hospital under police guard.
