Vavilis given more jail time

Imprisoned drug smuggler Apostolos Vavilis was yesterday handed a supplementary 22-month jail sentence after admitting to forging a police identity card. Vavilis, who is serving a seven-year sentence in Korydallos for heroin smuggling, accepted full responsibility for forging an ID card in the name of Apostolos Fokas with the help of Yiannis Triantafyllakis, a retired police officer. Triantafyllakis was acquitted of harboring a criminal and collaborating to extract a false declaration after Vavilis told the court that Triantafyllakis had been unaware of an outstanding arrest warrant against him when asked to speed up the process of issuing an ID card. Vavilis, who has been linked to shady transactions with the Church of Greece, the police and foreign secret services, claimed he wanted the false ID card so he could travel to Italy to defend himself against criminal charges.
