New urban med clinics in pipeline

Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos said yesterday that new urban medical centers will soon be opened across the country as part of the government’s drive to improve the national health system. Avramopoulos said that the Health Ministry is also in contact with local municipal authorities and other state bodies in a bid to shape up existing medical centers. He did not specify when the new state health clinics will be up and running, nor how many are involved. «At this moment we are working with local councils so that existing health centers are upgraded,» the minister said. «I am referring mainly to municipal clinics and at the same time improving decentralized units,» he added. Regarding his recent proposal to staff the health system by sidestepping employment procedures adopted by the Supreme Council for Personnel Selection (ASEP), the minister said he believed this idea was on the right track. «I must tell you that, if I judge by the broader reaction, everything looks like we are on the right course,» he said.
