Smash-and-grab bank gang sought by police
Police yesterday arrested a suspect thought to be part of a gang that would survey banks and rob victims after they had withdrawn large amounts of money from ATM machines. The 20-year-old suspect, who was not identified, is part of a three-member gang that is believed to have garnered more than 170,000 euros in the last two years. The group allegedly operated mostly in the western Athens suburbs of Menidi and Ano Liosia. The suspects would follow bank customers who had withdrawn cash and rob them as they walked to their car. Police said that in the event that the victims had reached their car, the suspects would then smash the vehicle’s window and make away with the purse or briefcase. A manhunt has been launched for the other two suspects, aged 24 and 27, police added.
