The chart shows…

The chart shows that Greece lags far behind the other member states of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in terms of spending per university student (Canada, Luxembourg and New Zealand are omitted, while Chile and India are associated non-members). Among the other members, the majority use state financing and only in four nations (Australia, Japan, South Korea and the US) does state financing account for less than 50 percent of the total. Given that in Greece research is mostly conducted by universities, the chart is also an indication of the poor state of research financing in the country. Despite the call for private sector funds at last week’s OECD education ministers’ meeting in Athens, Greece rejected that option.
