Expanding kiosks to be squeezed by police

Kiosks that gradually have taken up more space on sidewalks, selling ever more items, are to be the target of a police operation due to start today, officers told Kathimerini yesterday. Police sources said that dozens of complaints have been received at police headquarters in Athens from people who are unhappy that some kiosks have been transformed into makeshift minimarkets. Officers are due to run checks on the city’s kiosks from today and will be on the lookout particularly for owners who have illegally placed refrigerators around their kiosks. There are fears that some of the refrigerators, which contain ice cream as well as soft drinks and juices, could be a risk to public health. Police will be also check if the people who have licenses to own a kiosk have illegally sublet their operation.
