Did academic blind his wife?

A university professor in Thessaloniki has been arrested and remanded in custody for allegedly torturing his wife, causing her to lose her eyesight, police said yesterday. The 50-year-old suspect, who was not identified, is accused of repeatedly beating his wife since 1992, leaving her with serious head and facial injuries. Police said that on one occasion the woman had been beaten on the head so savagely that the retina of her eye had become detached. Such an injury is common in boxers. The professor’s wife also lost her front teeth and suffered a slashed ear because of her husband’s alleged abuse. Evidence about the professor’s beatings and intimidation of his wife came to light last November, during custody litigation regarding the couple’s two children. The professor’s wife had filed for divorce. The suspect told police that the accusations were dreamed up by his wife and two daughters.
