Suburban railway expansion is on track

Thousands of passengers can start using three new Proastiakos suburban railway stations today in Ano Liosia, Aspropyrgos and Magoula – all in western Attica – that were opened yesterday by Transport Minister Michalis Liapis. Transport authorities said the stations, which cost some 10 million euros to build, would serve up to around 5,000 passengers every day. However, there are fears that passengers will have difficulty reaching Aspropyrgos station to catch the train. A ticket from Magoula, which is the closest station to the Thriassio hospital, to Doukissis Plakentias station in northern Athens will cost 70 cents. Liapis said that stations in Pendeli and Piraeus would also be opened by the end of the year. Another three new stations in Halkida, Kiato and Metamorphosis are due for completion by the beginning of next year.
