Trash dumped into quarries

Two illegal quarries in Markopoulo, east of Athens, are suspected of being partly used as landfills and possibly accepting toxic waste, according to reports from concerned residents. Hundreds of trucks were seen traveling to the two quarries between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, transporting tons of waste. Local residents said that some of the rubbish reaching the quarries looked like partially treated sludge that the Environment Ministry had said would be exported to Germany for treatment. Residents are concerned that there is no state supervision of the area, since the companies mining the mountain are already openly flouting the law. The quarries operate illegally, despite a recent Council of State decision that ordered them to close down. Local officials, however, have so far been dodging the responsibility of shutting down the quarries.
