Serial arsonists leave hot trail

Police arrested yesterday three men in Omonia, central Athens, suspected of taking part in a number of arson attacks since 1994, including Monday’s fire at an ATM machine in the city center. Police said that they were able to identify the men after witnesses described the attack on a National Bank cash machine in the early hours of Monday. After setting fire to the ATM, the three suspects are said to have returned to the scene in a van and started to abuse and threaten witnesses while police were on the spot investigating the crime. The witnesses recognized the men as being involved in the incident and informed police who then started to search for the vehicle and the suspects. Police added that they are searching for another two suspects, a man and a woman, who have allegedly set fire to the offices of extreme right-wing group Chryssi Avgi and other small political organizations over the 12-year period.
