Inmate causes Athens chaos for 45-euro loot

A 29-year-old man from Kazakhstan held up a gift shop in central Athens yesterday and then hijacked a bus in a bid to escape from police with a cache of 45 euros only to be arrested shortly afterward. Police said the armed man held up a store in Aghios Panteleimonas at around 1.30 p.m. with a female partner. After taking 35 euros, the two ran from the shop in different directions when the store owner began to chase the man. A nearby officer saw the incident and launched a police chase after the suspect, who was an priosner who had been released on furlough while serving a 25-year sentence. The inmate then hijacked a passing bus and ordered the driver to keep driving after setting free the passengers. He then stole 10 euros from the driver and got off the bus but was caught by police as he tried to hail a cab.
