Flares blaze a trail to rioters

Police are investigating if a company that is alleged to have illegally imported flare guns and cartridges had supplied the flares fired by rioters during recent protests in Athens, officers said yesterday. After inspecting the firm’s premises in Menidi, northwestern Athens, police found 590 units used to fire flares and 2,360 cartridges which had been shipped from Italy without any paperwork. The search was conducted as part of a crackdown by police after some rioters fired flares at officers during the recent protests in Athens against education reforms. Officers said that 40 flare guns and 160 cartridges were missing from the boxes found at the warehouse. Police arrested an employee who was working at the warehouse but said they are looking for the owner of the business, which they did not name.
