Homes in peril from store fire
The fire service prevented a blaze that broke out early yesterday at an insulation factory in northwest Athens from reaching nearby houses after 60 firefighters took part in the effort to contain and extinguish the fire. The business, which included a store and a warehouse in Aghioi Anargyroi, was almost completely destroyed in the fire. Three trucks and a car that were parked in the yard in front of the building were also seriously damaged, the fire service said. The blaze started at 6 a.m. and quickly spread because of the highly flammable nature of the goods that were being stored on the premises. The area was engulfed by thick black smoke for around two hours as the firefighters tried to put out the flames. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.
